"New Ideas in Galactic Disk Formation"

Ari Maller
University of Massachusetts at Amherst

Abstract:

The standard theory of galactic disk formation by detailed conservation of angular momentum has been largely successful in explaining the sizes of observed disk galaxies. However, recently a number of problems with the theory have been demonstrated. I will demonstrate that the addition of mass dependent feedback in a hierarchical formation scenario can remove these problems producing disk galaxies in agreement with todays observations.
